It is a common misconception that regular panic attacks are some form of anxiety disorder. Normally, when it becomes more prevalent and uncontrollable, it develops into anxiety disorder.

Putting someone through an test by intentionally trying to cause them anxiety will more than likely not be a sufficient test. Many people who actually have an anxiety disorder have found ways to disguise their feelings and condition.

Also keep in mind, when giving someone a test, it should be done in the most cautious and respectful ways. However, the Internet proves to be the best platform for conducting a test. They have tests that people can take by themselves, in a comfortable environment at home that causes little to no anxiety.

The results of the test will obviously reflect the answers that the patient gives. An online test will normally follow a mathematical formula that is based on scoring and/or diagnosing someone for a disorder. Nobody will be diagnosed if they didn’t enter information that happens to be statistically in accordance with people that suffer from it. 6 Ways to Relieve Test Anxiety

During test taking, attitude is everything. Beginning your test day with a feeling of confidence can make all the difference. The key to confidence is knowing that you are prepared. Not only does this imply that you have studied and know the material, but also that you have practiced testing and know the types of questions that will be on the test.

Preparation is not just about what is on the test, but also knowing how a test is scored. Beginning with the end in mind always brings the results you are looking for. Know what score you are shooting for. Preparation also means that you are well rested, have eaten a nutritious meal, and that your pencils and erasers are ready.

Our minds are much more powerful than many people realize. Visualization of success is a powerful strategy that is underemployed by most. Imagine yourself calmly working through the test and passing the exam. Feel how comfortably you can work through the questions, how smoothly you pencil moves, and how dry your palms are because you are not the least bit nervous. On the day of the test, recall this visualization and make it your reality.

Be gentle with your words. Speak to yourself with positive words and phrases. It is easier to perform well when you are being encouraged and not being beaten down. Self talk is often a self-fulfilling prophecy and your thought life should be guarded.

Anxiety is made worse by poor breathing techniques. Learn to breath deeply and slowly. Yoga practice and many relaxation methods employ breathing as a primary tool to get the body under control. If you start to feel your body tense, take a deep breath and let it out slowly releasing all of your body tension along with it.

Practice being fully present. Our minds have a way of thinking the worst and imagining a bad outcome making mountains out of mole hills. Focusing on the task at hand and not letting the mind imagine the future will prevent testing anxiety. Focus on how the chair feels under you, or touch your clothing and focus on that sensation. Keep your mind in the present and it will not imagine the worst.

Test Anxiety – What Causes It and How to Overcome It

It was just another day for Sandy when she picked her daughter up at school. Immediately she knew something wasn’t right, so she asked her 9 yr old, “Beth, what’s wrong?” Beth looked up and said, “We had a test today and I freaked out!” Sandy didn’t have to ask how well she did. She knew it was bad because this wasn’t the first time.

That’s when it hit Sandy. The Maryland School Assessment (MSA) test was next week and her daughter had to do well. I mean her whole academic life depended on it. No pressure here.

A common misconception is that this is a case of not knowing how to study for tests. So the solution that most parents and schools implement is a course on how to be a better tester. But something deeper actually is going on. Every human being has an internal set of process that run the show. They are referred to as internal strategy. What Sandy was experiencing was a limiting internal strategy in action.

When Sandy “thought” she was falling behind the other kids in a test it triggered the limiting internal strategy. That thought led to toxic internal dialog, “I’m so stupid!!”, which in turn led to her feeling pretty bad about herself. Unfortunately, she looped it back to more toxic dialog. This loop continued until she “freaked out”.

Disability Assessment – 4 Tips to Effectively Reduce Customer Test Anxiety

Many workforce development agencies provide some sort of assessment to measure their customer’s reading and math skills. In most cases, this is done to determine the need for basic skills assistance or to qualify the customer for other services. Many of you have probably already witnessed that using the word “test” often raises the anxiety level of a person just by its mentioning. Anxiety in and of itself is caused by anticipating something stressful. For your customers, that anticipation may be due to the fear of not being found eligible for services, potential embarrassment because of reading or math scores, or just feeling vulnerable to what may or may not happen as a result of taking the assessment.

The following are 4 tips you can use to explain the need for this type of assessment without having your customer exit out through the back door before they’ve even started.

1. First, don’t call it a test. For your purposes, and that of most workforce development agencies, you are doing an assessment or screening of your customer’s skills and abilities. Make sure you present it in that way to your customers. Even by definition, an assessment or appraisal sounds a lot less threatening than a test or critical evaluation of one’s skills.

2. Clearly explain the reason why you’re giving the assessment. Spell it out in simple terms, but more importantly, let your customers know that the purpose of the assessment is to qualify them for services NOT to screen them out. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed you will make your customers feel about it. If they clearly understand their scores may help vs. hinder them, taking the assessment will seem much less scary.

3. If your customer was referred by another agency, always check to see if similar assessments were given somewhere else. There is no reason to re-administer an assessment if current results from an acceptable tool already exist. Our customer’s often have to fill out enough paperwork with repeat questions depending on how many agencies they are receiving services from. Your efforts to locate duplicate assessments will be well received and will help in establishing rapport with your customer.

4. Know how to provide testing accommodations to customers with disabilities if they are requested. A word of caution…make sure if you make any alterations to the assessment yourself, you don’t invalidate the results. For example, if you have a customer that is unable to read the assessment due to a visual impairment, it may be okay to read the math portion of the assessment to him or her, but certainly not okay to read the reading portion out loud.

You should be able to find helpful testing accommodation suggestions for most assessments on the publisher’s website. If after searching the publisher’s website for accommodation information you are unable to locate it, most will have an 800 number you can call with questions. Test Anxiety And How You Can Be A Better Test Taker

From a psychological perspective, our responses to environmental stimulus, and issues pertaining to life, anxiety level is said to be a key factor in how humans perceive and react. It comes without saying; everyone does not posses the same abilities, especially where test taking is concerned, but all can adopt and improve. Each individual may vary, and in most cases, significantly, depending on their level of exposure and adaptability.

While test taking may just be a tip of the iceberg, there is a great deal of mental acuity that is involved in becoming efficient at any task that requires a high level of concentration. I am what you consider a “not-so-good” test taker; at least, I used to be. This problem has affected me throughout my college career, but I have learned how to overcome by applying a few techniques, which I deemed might also help you. It has been since recent that I am becoming more comfortable with taking tests. Consequently, I don’t think the problem lies in the actual taking of the test, but rather, the moments prior to performing the actual task. I have tried many suggestions, including those offered to me by friends and college professors. Did they work? Well, a few of them did, but the results were questionable. I am a good student, and for the most part, can very good when I put things into perspective. I study hard, sometimes even more than I should, but I still do not produce the way I know I can.

I have had some of the toughest classes in my career, but none so hard that distorted my confidence. Mind you, I posses a high self esteem and great poise in abilities. Therefore, I do not think my study habits are appalling; in fact, they just don’t measure up to the amount of effort I put in tests preparation. For example, the night before the test, I would review what I have studied days in advance. I get adequate sleep, and set aside ample time for relaxation. However, moments before the test, I start to question myself; wondering whether or not I had covered everything. Deep down I know I have, but, based on the subject matter, I somehow feel under prepared. Does that ever happen to you?

I mean, moments leading up to the test, my palms began to sweat and my mind became discombobulated with information irrelevant to the actual test. My next reaction would be to try and figure out which parts, if any, of the material had I left out. By this time, I begin to feel the need to review again; and it is at this time that all the material became unfamiliarly foreign to me.

According to psychologists, Good tests define and energize the teaching/learning process; bad tests ruin it. Both teachers and students benefit from tests. Teachers need to know what students have internalized from their lessons in order to select and focus subsequent lessons. Tests provide that information. Students need to review, organize, structure, recall and apply new learning to make it their own. Tests measure their progress toward that goal said, School psychologist Beth Bruno.

During the test, I would normally start by scanning to the entire test to see what, if anything, looked familiar, and if not, I would then proceed to the area that seem easiest. More times than any, I would start with the multiple choices. By doing this, I felt it would boost my chances of obtaining a reasonable score. Sometimes it works, and other times it shatters my score and tarnished my performance.

I have always loved the Sciences because I thought scientist were the wisest of all people among humans. Their ability to collect data, analyze and interpret and synthesize the world through test and experiments seemed adventurous. Although, among the Sciences Physics and Organic Chemistry remain the hardest for me. And often times, after having reviewed the test and saw my foolish mistakes, I knew that I could have done better.

Having thoroughly researched information on test anxiety, I have come to this conclusion; as a test-taker thinks, so does his environment materializes. The reality of that statement when simply put, is that, we all have some control over the final outcome.

Whether temporary or permanent, what we receive is a direct result of that which we perceive mentally. As a result, negative thinking is the root of poor test performance, and I was the patient. As stated in a report, thought awareness, rational thinking and positive thinking tools help foster the right environment for the mind to function at its best. Experts call this process cognitive therapy or “Cognitive Restructuring.” Thought awareness is a technique whereby the individual examines his or her thought process, and determines if the current thought promotes a positive outlook or a negative one. If the thought does not coincide with the desired goal, the individual is advised to reconstruct their mental state by refocusing only on those things which lead to positive results. Examples of negative thoughts can be lack of confidence in test-taking abilities; believing the worst at all times, and been overwhelm with the feeling of ill-equipped and doubts. All these and many others aid in suppressing the positive feedback mechanism which increases creativity and optimal performance.

On the other hand, Drs. D. Greenberger and C. Padesky, from their book (Mind over Mood) suggest that in order for poor test-takers to become more proficient at test taking, they need to apply the following strategies:

1. Write down the situation that triggered the negative thoughts

2. Identify the moods felt in the situation

3. Record the automatic thoughts that are experienced when they are felt

4. Identify the evidence that supports these hot thoughts

5. Identify the evidence that does supports these hot thoughts

6. Identify fair, balanced thoughts about the situation

7. Observe your mood now and think about what you are going to do

Scientist believe that this procedure will force the individual to analyze his thoughts, before and after, then determine the priority of the thought in terms of whether or not it useful for dealing with the current situation.

After reexamining my reaction to text taking, I now see how positive thinking can be used to foster a better frame of mind. I believe if I had applied one or more of the techniques listed above, my level of anxiety would have been lessened. Sometimes the pressures of doing well, getting the GPA needed for entrance into college programs, can be enough to change the course of a test result, but they do not have to be the determining factor; mental preparation, self control and positive thinking can transform your experience into astonishing endings.
